We headed to San Diego this month for our last vacation before entering the Navy world, but that doesn’t mean our vacation wasn’t loaded with Navy stuff! We spent a day touring the USS Midway aircraft carrier museum (5 hours and still didn’t see all of it!) – it was cool (and kinda scary) to get an idea of where D could end up living for a good portion of the next few years. D absolutely loved watching the Navy helicopters and planes land in Coronado and fly by the coast. I don’t think we’d complain if D ended up stationed there in the future, although we may have to just pitch a tent on the beach with the crazy expensive housing!
D testing out his future digs:
One of the unexpected fun parts of the trip was all the wildlife we saw. With our whale watching tour, we were kind of expecting just a three hour boat ride but we actually got to see gray whales and tons of dolphins up close, which was really cool. We also had a fun (albeit smelly) time cozying up to the sea lions at La Jolla Cove. And springtime at the zoo meant baby animals everywhere!!! Of course my favorite was the baby gorilla – if you didn’t know this about me, I LOVE gorillas and actually spent my childhood planning to become a zoologist and work with them. A dislike for science and viewing of Hotel Rwanda made me rethink whether that was the right path for me (luckily working with families is not all that different than monkeys). My heart still flutters when I see a gorilla however, and seeing a baby for the first time was probably one of the highlights of my life. D graciously let me spend probably a good hour taking photos and marveling.
That lump is a gray whale – two mommas and two babies.
And the adorable star of the show:
The weather was PERFECT and thankfully we came home to sunshine to make the transition easier. I think I’d be a very happy camper if I could spend my life paddleboarding, doing yoga on the beach, enjoying gorgeous sunsets, and eating lots of heavenly fish and chips and Mexican food. I guess a few days will have to do for now!
